The Scooter Libby of Baghdad

Distracted by Campaign ‘08, Americans may have missed a critical event in Iraq: the acquittal of former deputy health minister, Hakim al-Zamili. He was about to go on trial for using emergency rooms as torture chambers; murdering and kidnapping Sunnis; and diverting millions of dollars from the Health Ministry to anti-US cleric, Moqtadr al-Sadr and his militia.
The trial of al-Zamili had been in the works for a year in the ‘Rule of Law Complex’ built - of course - at US taxpayer expense. This was heralded as ‘progress’ toward meting out justice for corrupt Shi’a party members. Miraculously, at the eleventh hour, witnesses refused to testify, the trial was terminated, and all charges were dropped by PM al-Maliki who has proven an apt pupil of Bush Administration ethics and morality: lawbreakers in the ruling party are to be pardoned, irrespective of their guilt.
Just ask Scooter Libby.
