GI Bill Hypocrisy

Americans watched in amazement as George W. Bush falsely took credit for legislation that passed, despite his veto threat. Speaking from the Oval Office, he claimed: “The vote is the result of collaboration between my Administration and both parties on Capitol Hill.” The Decider was referring to the GI Bill for the 21st Century (S. 22/HR 5740), introduced by Vietnam combat veterans Jim Webb (D-VA) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE). It was co-sponsored by many in Congress, including Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH District 1).

The bill calls for granting college tuition for returning Iraq and Afghan conflict veterans. It is minimal thanks for those who gave so much. Remember: this bill was passed over the objections of George W. Bush.

Both the President and Maverick John Mc Cain had condemned the legislation, fearing it might discourage soldiers from re-enlisting after their tours were over. By making civilian life too attractive, the White House worried that the military would be depleted. Candidate Mc Cain was conveniently absent when the bill was approved by a 75-22 vote in the Senate.

Cynically calculating that Americans would forget his objection to giving a hand-up to deserving vets, the President flaunted a new level of cynicism, even for his Administration. As the old Irish saying goes: "If you get a reputation as an early riser, you can sleep till noon."
